    Documentary Film Nights

    July 15, 2009

Buena Vida Fitness Centre is screening 3 documentary films filmed here in Nicaragua.  On Tuesday July 21, 7:30pm they will screen “With our own Two Hands” (English only) and “The World is Watching” (English with Spanish Subtitles).  “With our own two hands” is a film that follows a group of sixteen Canadian farmers who, in January, 1985, journeyed to Rivas, Nicaragua, to help fellow farmers rebuild equipment and farms that had been ravaged by civil war. “The world is watching”  focuses on several journalists working in Nicaragua during the negotiations surrounding the Arias Peace Plan in November 1987. It examines how the news business works, revealing the inevitable distortions that become part of the process. This film was a winner of many international awards.

On Tuesday July 28 at 7:30 pm they will show “The World Stopped Watching“(English with Spanish Subtitles).  Fifteen years after “The World Is Watching”  the filmmakers return to Nicaragua with some of the journalists from the first film to discover what became of the first revolution to be conducted in the glare of the world media and the people of it’s country. They question the role and responsibility of journalists and their employers who first put Nicaraguans under the microscope, and then rushed off to the next hot spot.

All three films are by internationally acclaimed Canadian filmmaker: Peter Raymont.  Admission is Free.

    Events I’ve missed

    April 6, 2009

My apologies to all for missing 3 of the most ‘happening’ events last week. Sometimes you just don’t hear about things until the day (or hour) before they happened.

Friday night, Big Wave Dave hosted his “pre-Semana Santa, pack-your-bags, head-for-the-hills, and GET THE HELL OUT OF DODGE PARTY”. The popular Managua based band, The Pretenders, entertained with a tribute to CCR.

Saturday night all the local surf fans turned out at Tsunami’s Bar to watch the launch of a new film featuring many local surfers catching some of the best local waves.

And Sunday, Mango Rosa, hosted their Summer Pool Party and reprised said surf film.

There is always something happening in San Juan del Sur and keeping one’s ear to the ground for the latest is half the fun and half the challenge.

    Tourism Investment

    March 30, 2009

According to centralamericalink.com, local and international investors are set to invest $33.3 million in tourism in this lovely country. Two of the developments sited in the story (originally published in Efe) are located in the San Juan region.

Pacific Turtle Resort and Spa has recently broken ground in the south east corner of town and is expected to have over ninety villas and condos; two infinity pools, bars, restaurants, as well as a spa and fitness centre.

Aqua Resort and Spa (near Tola) is another project expected to benefit from this investment influx.

Apparently, there is still a reasonable amount of confidence in investment in this region given that both of these resorts are extremely high end projects.
